CAREER PLANNING BEFORE CHOOSING A COLLEGE? ABSOLUTELY!
Students who receive career planning prior to college selection and attendanceā¦
- Are more goal focused, motivated and have higher academic achievement while in college.
- Have fewer major switches and college transfers.
- Graduate on time.
Career planning is one of the most important steps a High School student can do prior to applying to colleges. Unfortunately, career planning is often overlooked during the college planning process because students and parents have prioritized other criteria for college selection such as prestige, sports, image, influence of peers, teachers, Alma Mater etc.
A major factor behind college transfer and drop out rates is a lack of career planning and a failure to make college decisions based on their career goals that are compatible with their interests, talents and career relevant personal attributes. Research by the US Department of Education and American College Testing show the Consequence of not having a career plan is a much higher risk that the student will “transfer” to another college or “drop out” all together.
To give you an idea of the size of the transfer/dropout problem:
- Each year about 50% of college freshman transfer out of the college in which they first enrolled
- Of that 50%
- About 25% transfer to another college
- 15% transferring just once
- 10% transferring twice or more, taking 6+ years to complete a "4-year" undergraduate program
- The remaining 25% drop out of college completely
- About 25% transfer to another college
The solution is to use MCP, the on-line Career and College Planning Program.
