CAREER PLANNING BEFORE CHOOSING A COLLEGE?       ABSOLUTELY!

S
tudents who receive career planning prior to college selection and attendance…

Career planning is one of the most important steps a High School student can do prior to applying to colleges.  Unfortunately, career planning is often overlooked during the college planning process because students and parents have prioritized other criteria for college selection such as prestige, sports, image, influence of peers, teachers, Alma Mater etc.

A major factor behind college transfer and drop out rates is a lack of career planning and a failure to make college decisions based on their career goals that are compatible with their interests, talents and career relevant personal attributes.  Research by the US Department of Education and American College Testing show the Consequence of not having a career plan is a much higher risk that the student will “transfer” to another college or “drop out” all together.

To give you an idea of the size of the transfer/dropout problem:

The solution is to use MCP, the on-line Career and College Planning Program

THE HISTORY OF MCP

MCP is a by-product of the IBM Education & Career Exploration System (ECES) for use by high school students, and the FOCUS Career and Education Planning System developed by Career Dimensions. FOCUS is one of the most widely used systems in educational institutions in the USA. MCP utilizes the best features of the FOCUS system and ECES. Numerous studies published in professional journals and text books describe the effectiveness of these systems in improving the career exploration, planning and decision making of high school students.

The design team for the IBM systems consisted of nationally prominent career development educators and theorists under the leadership of Professor Donald E. Super, of Columbia University, and then President of the American Psychological Association Division of Counseling Psychology. Other team members included Professor Roger A. Myers of Columbia University and past president of the American Psychological Association Division of Counseling Psychology, Professor David Tiedeman, then of Harvard University, and Professor David Campbell, then of the University of Minnesota and co-developer of the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory. Dr Frank J. Minor, Senior Psychologist in the IBM Corporation was the IBM Project Director with overall responsibility for developing systems to support career guidance.
